TY - RPRT TI - SOWFIA Noise Monitoring for Wave Energy Developments Brochure AU - SOWFIA AB - The ocean is not a ‘silent world’, particularly nearcoastlines. Wave breaking, seismic events and marineinhabitants all contribute to background noise. In recent years, sounds from human activities suchas shipping, seismic surveys and seabed drilling haveincreased the ambient level in certain areas. It is likelythat the deployment of Wave Energy Converters (WECs)will introduce new sources of noise into this already‘noisy’ underwater environment. Due to ocean marineinhabitants’ dependence on sound, it is important thatpotential noise impacts from the construction andoperation of wave energy farms are better understood.Consequently, and also as a result of EU and nationallegislation, comprehensive environmental assessmentsexamining potential impacts associated with WECsshould include an assessment of potential underwaternoise impacts.
