This radar is based on a conventional ship radar, which is operated in fixed beam mode, i.e. with a fixed antenna. In a field test with the prototype "Bird Scan System M1", it was shown that almost maintenance-free and reliable continuous operation in offshore wind farms is possible. The fixed beam radar prototype for bird migration detection was calibrated by synchronous parallel measurements with the target tracking radar "Superfledermaus" of the Swiss Ornithological Institute in Sempach.
