TY - JOUR TI - Assessing the Environmental Impact of the Annapolis Tidal Power Project AU - Tidmarsh, W T2 - Water Science & Technology AB - An 18 MW pilot tidal power project is being developed in an existing tidal barrage on the Annapolis River Estuary in southwestern Nova Scotia to evaluate the performance of a prototype STRAFLO turbine. An environmental assessment to identify potential impacts on regional biophysical and socio-economic features was completed.Construction of the barrage had already substantially altered the environment. The assessment focussed on impacts associated with construction and operation of the power plant itself, and the increased maximum operating elevation of the impounded basin. Environmental issues associated with the power plant included release of suspended sediment, scour in existing channels and at adjacent shorelines, flood flow management, and passage of anadromous fish through the barrage. Concerns with increased basin water levels included interference with existing agriculture, flooding, and accelerated rates of bank erosion.
