TI - The Impacts of Wind Power on Terrestrial Mammals: A Synthesis

AB - There are significant knowledge gaps concerning impacts of wind power development on terrestrial mammals. The main effects appear to be caused by habitat changes and different types of disturbances. Roads in wind parks allow for an increased access for outdoor recreation, hunting and leisure traffic. It is well known that disturbances from such human activities can affect large wildlife as well as domestic reindeer – and in effect lead to a loss of available habitat.This report compiles the available knowledge in the field. The compilation shows that the increased human access can be a problem for large carnivores and deer. These species tend to prefer such remote, upland areas with low human disturbance that are currently of particular interest for wind power development. A main conclusion is that better monitoring of effects of wind power on wildlife and domestic reindeer is needed.
