Sandia National Labs is working with Woods Hole Oceanographic Inst. to develop a “bolt-on” wave energy converter (WEC) to help power oceanographic sensors. In addition to Sandia and Woods Hole, the project team includes Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Inst., Evergreen Innovations, Johns Hopkins University, East Carolina University, and the National Renewable Energy Laboratory. The team is working on a novel “pitch resonator” WEC concept to support power needs on the Coastal Surface Mooring (CSM) system within the Ocean Observatories Initiative (OOI) Pioneer Array. Details on the scoping and concept design phase of the project are captured in SAND2023-10861 (https://doi.org/10.2172/2280833).
